Walter Thomas Pattison was born in Chicago IL, and attended Harvard University where he obtained a B.S. degree in 1925, M.A. in 1926 and Ph. D. in 1931. He also did additional graduate studies at Minnesota (1926-28) and Ecole des Chartes (1933-34). He was appointed Assistant Professor at Wesleyan College, Middletown, Connecticut (1929-38), Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota (1938-47), and Full Professor from 1947-70, when he retired.
